The Bible and Famous Americans

OFTEN CALLED THE “BOOK OF BOOKS,” the Bible holds a unique place in American history, politics, religion, and popular culture. Unfortunately, though, biblical illiteracy is so prevalent today that when President Ronald Reagan spoke so eloquently of a “shining city on a hill,” few people realized he was referring to a sermon given by John Winthrop, the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, in 1630, which was based on the words of Jesus Christ in Matthew 5. When people hear Martin Luther King Jr,’s magnificent “I Have a Dream” speech, most do not recognize it numerous biblical allusions and quotes. Nevertheless, the transforming power of the Word of God remains to impact lives everywhere.

The patriot who feels himself in the service of God, who acknowledges Him in all his ways, has the promise of Almighty direction, and will find His Word in his greatest darkness, “ a lantern to his feet and a lamp unto his paths.” He will therefore seek to establish for is country in the eyes of the world, such a character as shall make her not unworthy of the name of a Christian nation.

FRANCIS SCOTT KEY
Author of “The Star-Spangled Banner”

Unless we form the habit of going to the Bible in bright moments as well as in trouble, we cannot fully respond to its consolations because we lack equilibrium between light and darkness.

HELEN KELLER
Writer and Social Reformer

The Bible is a window in this prison-world, through which we may look into eternity.

TIMOTHY DWIGHT
President of Yale University

The most remarkable thing, though, is the difference Scripture makes in the lives of those who sincerely follow it. I’ve never heard anyone who said, “I’ve studied the Bible; I’ve lived it for years – and it doesn’t work for me.” The people I’ve talked to say that the more they truly absorb Scripture and seek to live by its precepts, they find God is able to accomplish amazing things for His purposes through their lives.

CHARLES COLSON
Founder of Prison Fellowship

In all my perplexities and distresses, the Bible has never failed to give me light and strength.

ROBERT E. LEE

A Bible and a newspaper in every house, a good school in every district – all studied and appreciated as they merit – are the principal support of virtue, morality, and civil liberty.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

The Bible towers in content above all earlier literature; and it towers just as impressively over all subsequent literature in the direct simplicity of its message and the catholicity of it’s appeal to men of all lands and times.

WILLIAM FOXWELL ALBRIGHT

Should not the Bible regain the place it once held as a schoolbook? Its morals are pure, its examples captivating and noble… In no book is there so good English, so pure and so elegant, and by teaching all the same book they will speak alike, and the Bible will justly remain the standard of language as well as of faith.

FISCHER AMES
Author of the First Amendment

To call the Bible a great book is an understatement. It is, quite simply the cornerstone of Western civilization.

CHARLTON HESTON

The secret of my success? It is simple. It is found in the Bible, “In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths.”

GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER

If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity.
